working together for equality and social justice in the Mediterranean

The REF is a network of French civil society organizations founded in 2005, committed to a democratic and inclusive Mediterranean region.

It works by strengthening ties between independent associations, unions, and collectives that share a commitment to human rights and social justice, and by amplifying their voices to the general public and institutions.

Building a network in France

The REF drives a collective movement that brings together a diverse range of actors committed to the Mediterranean: French associations, collectives, and unions, as well as individual members. Working as a network within the REF means producing knowledge, questioning practices, pooling approaches and resources, and empowering one another through collective action.

Strengthening solidarities in the Mediterranean

The REF helps strengthen ties between civil society actors, artists, researchers, and communities engaged across the Mediterranean region. By fostering experience sharing, cooperation, and joint initiatives, our collective action contributes to building sustainable Euro-Mediterranean solidarities based on shared values.

Amplifying the voices of civil society

The REF is committed to defending human rights and democratic practices, standing against the rise of authoritarianism and far-right ideologies. We produce and disseminate information based on non-profit expertise, host public debates, speak at universities, and engage with French public authorities regarding the restriction and necessary protection of civic space in the Mediterranean.
